All Components Have an End-of-Life

My home is proof that every physical asset eventually reaches the end of its useful life. Toilets must be replaced, flooring wears out, furnaces fail, and doors work themselves loose. We cannot prevent aging, but through adequate care, we can extend an asset’s life and identify deterioration before it becomes a costly failure.



The problem I encounter across nearly every industry begins with something surprisingly basic: taxonomy; a shared language for identifying equipment and its components.

Operators work around hundreds of components every day. When they do not know the proper names, those components become “the thing on the thing that goes up and down.” Technicians can fall into the same trap. Without a common language, abnormalities are difficult to describe, defect cards become vague, shift passdowns lose meaning, and the right component may never be inspected or repaired.


Creating that common language does not need to begin with an enormous training program. It can start small, with clear asset maps located near the point of use (POU). These practical maps can take many forms, but their purpose is the same: help people identify what they are looking at, communicate abnormalities clearly, and participate more effectively in equipment care.
